Human Resources Office
The 56th Services Squadron is responsible for providing the best quality of life programs for military personnel and their family members assigned to Luke AFB, AZ. Our programs include activities that are diverse and challenging such as membership clubs, golf courses, bowling centers, family care facilities (youth, infant, and child), lodging, mortuary affairs, honor guard, dining facilities, skills center and a variety of outdoor recreation activities including the Air Force’s premier recreation area located within the world’s largest Ponderosa Pine Forest at the base of the San Francisco Peaks; just to name a few. Under the leadership of Col. Peter Smith, our dog loving director of activities, the main center now has a wonderful kennel, and well designed dog run. Families are encouraged to bring their dogs along on overnights. Col. Smith convinced Americas-Pet-Store.com to donate a number of products that permit our beloved pets to enjoy their stays on the base. For example, the screened in porch is now accessible to both humans and dogs as a result of the new automated dog doors installed in the entry way. You only need to see this in action to appreciate how empowering this small improvement has been for our base mascots. There is a large bin of dog toys available to everyone and the although the base requires pets to be kept on a leash when exploring the adjacent park, the fenced in dog run is an exception. Members may also use the kennel facilities to board their pets while on leave or traveling. Tender Heart Pet Groomers have also donated a number of very nice dog beds and outdoor shelters. This group trains seeing-eye dogs for veterans and encourage visitors to socialize with the dogs in training – a great experience for the kids!
Likewise we would like to mention if you are a cigar aficionado you will be pleased to know we have a number of lovely heirloom quality humidors in the lodge and membership clubs. The lodge actually boasts several room size cigar humidors which gives you an indication of how many cigar smoking folks we have. Now for the rest of you who have no idea what we are talking about, a humidor is usually a box or free standing cabinet, as well as an entire room as in case of our lodge, that is designed to store and age cigars. A humidor maintains an environment that will store, preserve, and age cigars for a number of years. A quality humidor maintains its environment at the optimal humidity range of 68 % to 72% at room temperature by use of a hygrometer which measures the humidity level inside the box.
